Welcome to VideoGamer.com Plays, our weekly feature where we give you the inside track on what's been whirring in our disc drives this week. We'll be honest (so if we've been playing Superman on the N64 we'll tell you). But if we've been hammering the latest billion-selling blockbuster we'll let you know about that too.

Much has been said about MGS4, but by far the biggest relief for me personally is the new control scheme. I played the previous games, but MGS2 and MGS3 felt stuck in the past with their controls. They were still great games, but I couldn't understand why I was forced to play with such an archaic control scheme that made everything more awkward than it ought to have been. MGS4 does away with numerous problems of the past by allowing you to shoot while moving. The camera in general is also better than before, meaning you can concentrate on playing the game rather than battling against control issues. Anyone who had similar problems in the past should find this fourth game in the series far more palatable.
Wesley Yin-Poole, Deputy Editor - Doodle Hex, Nintendo DS
The DS is fast becoming my favourite games console, and it's because of games like this. Doodle Hex is a fresh, quirky strategy game that sees you draw symbols to cast spells in real time. You can expect my full impressions early next week, but what I will say here is that I'm quickly falling for Doodle Hex's charm. It's not without its problems (the English translation is suspect) but this one should be on any discerning DS owner's radar. Period.
James Orry, News Editor - Metal Gear Solid 4, PS3
I've spent the best part of the last few days 'playing' Konami's fourth instalment in the Medal Gear Solid series. I say 'play', but I really mean sat working on a laptop watching Tom 'play'. I use the term 'play' loosely because from an outsider looking in I'm not really sure how much actual gameplay Tom's had to work through. Every time I look up at the screen it's just another lengthy cutscene that he's watching, as am I. By my calculations this means that by the time he's finished I'll have also 'played' most of the game as well.
