Over 1.4 million units of Nintendo game consoles sold in March.
The NPD Group has announced the video game sales figures for March in North America, confirming analyst predictions of a Nintendo dominated month.
A huge 720,000 Wii consoles were sold during the month, closely followed by 698,000 units of the Nintendo DS. Both machines pummelled the opposition, with the PSP's 297,000 units the closest from the following pack.
In a battle between the PS3 and Xbox 360 it was a victory for the Microsoft console, although only by a tiny margin. The Xbox 360 shifted 262,000 units, some five thousand units ahead of the PS3's 257,000 units. The PS2 brings up the rear with 216,000 units sold.
The huge Wii hardware sales are matched by a massive debut for Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The 'Nintendo fan service' brawler sold 2.7 million units, just shy of two million units more than Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in the No.2 position, which sold 752,300 units on Xbox 360.
EA's Army of Two on Xbox 360 claims third spot (606,100), Wii Play takes fourth (409,800) and Sony's God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP takes fifth (340,500). The PSP has a second title in the Top 10 with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII at No.6 (301,600). The remaining positions are filled by Guitar Hero III on Wii (264,100), MLB 2K8 on Xbox 360 (237,100), Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360 (237,000) and Army of Two on PS3 (224,900).
