Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim has said that region coded games may end with the PlayStation 2.
The inability to play import games on home region consoles has been the bane of many avid gamers' lives over the years, with early Japanese and American releases seemingly taunting European gamers. This might all change with the release of the PlayStation 3. According to Sony Computer Entertainment Australia managing director, Michael Ephraim, the region coding of games, which has been the norm in the games industry, may be abolished with the release of the PlayStation 3.
"If you look at the fact that it will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP (PlayStation Portable)," said Ephraim.
SCE recently lost a court battle which has put the company's region coding policy under the spotlight from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
