The BBC has published new information on the nation's videogame habits after extensive research into videogames was commissioned by BBC Audience Research, New Media.
The research project titled 'State of Play' profiled people of both sexes aged from 6 to 65 and discovered that around 60% of people asked, played games. One astonishing figure to come from the research is that 48% of all gamers are female. The research also showed that of those who took part, 100% of 6-10 year olds play games.
Now before, developers start to mass produce games for girls I think they should take a look at what criteria had to be met in order to be classified as a gamer in this research. You had to have played a videogame in the last six months and this could have been on any platform, including interactive TV. Now, for me, a gamer is not someone who played Solitaire for 10 minutes last week, or happened to have a go at a random iTV game.
The criteria used to determine who is a gamer seems to be stretching the term 'gamer; a little too far, but the research does have some interesting statistics, including information on where the different age groups play their games.
Take a look at all the findings on the BBC website.
