Despite the industry going through a transition period, Capcom has released its year-end financials, posting gains for the year.
For the 12-month period ending March 31, 2006, Capcom is reporting a profit of 6.9 billion yen ($62 million), with sales totalling 70.3 billion yen ($632 million). Capcom has acknowledged the worldwide success of Resident Evil 4 on the PlayStation 2 as one of the keys to the year's success, along with good sales from Monster Hunter 2 and Monster Hunter Freedom in Japan. The success of the Monster Hunter titles was beyond expectations, with Capcom noting that "the titles are growing into the flagship products of Capcom."
Success wasn't across the board though, with titles such as Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, Without Warning, and Beatdown all performing badly at retail. North America on a whole saw a slump in sales, down 18 percent from the previous year, and an 88 percent decline in operating income. European sales were up by 9 percent, but profit took a 90 percent fall.
The report also confirmed the closure of Capcom Studio 8, the studio responsible for the PS2 Maximo titles, and more recently the critically mauled Final Fight: Streetwise. Capcom Eurosoft, a subsidiary for distributing games across Europe, has also been dissolved.
In the coming financial year Capcom has several high profile titles lined up for release, including, Dead Rising and Lost Planet on Xbox 360, Okami and God Hand on PS2, and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for PSP.
